The agenda for the meeting will be as follows:

Agenda – Special Membership Meeting

  1. Call to Order
  2. Appointment of Meeting Chair
  3. Approval of the Agenda
  4. Proposal to Operate as one Joint Federal/Provincial Executive Committee

Be It Resolved That the Peterborough-Kawartha Federal Electoral District Association and the Provincial Riding Association be directed to develop and enter into a letter of understanding regarding the operation of a single merged Peterborough-Kawartha NDP Executive; and

Be It Further Resolved That the letter of understanding be in place no later than March 1, 2017 to facilitate one joint Peterborough-Kawartha NDP Annual General Meeting, and the election of a joint Peterborough-Kawartha NDP Executive.

Background

Starting in approximately 2004, NDP organizing in Peterborough occurred under the terms of a letter of understanding that created a merged federal/provincial Peterborough NDP Executive. This merged Executive remained in place, managing the local organizing for both the federal and provincial interests of the Party, until 2013 when it was asked by the Party to terminate the letter of understanding and return to operating separate and distinct federal and provincial bodies locally.

This request was made as a result of the shifting electoral district boundaries at the federal level, which resulted in the federal and provincial district boundaries no longer being the same, and therefore having differences in the membership of the district at the federal and provincial levels. The local membership complied, and separate federal and provincial Executives were subsequently elected, and have continued to operate as distinct federal and provincial organizations, with some resource sharing, to date.

In 2016 the provincial government revised the provincial electoral ridings to match the changes made federally, and the Peterborough-Kawartha provincial riding once again became coterminous with the Peterborough-Kawartha federal electoral district. As a result, there are some members who have expressed an interest in returning to a single Executive to manage NDP organizing in Peterborough-Kawartha; and this meeting will put this question and the decision to the membership.

Accessibility

The Peterborough Lions Centre is wheelchair accessible. Members can access the venue via Peterborough Transit by taking the Nicholls Park bus route (Route 9). Please contact Alissa Paxton if you have other needs that we can accommodate to facilitate your participation.
