Federal NDP Candidate Dave Nickle

E-mail Print PDF

Dave NickleDave Nickle is committed to the well-being of Peterborough. Born in Peterborough, the unstable local economy drove his family to Toronto in 1960. His love for the area was strong and summer visits to relatives were happily anticipated events.

Dave received his B.A. in History and Physical Health Education from the University of Western Ontario, an Honours B.A. from York University and a B. Ed. from the University of Toronto.

While working his way through school, Dave supported himself with a variety of jobs, including construction work, landscaping, waiting tables, tow-truck driving, working as a bricklayer’s helper, as an oil-rig worker, a C.N.R. trackman and a cab driver. This has given him a sense of the breadth of our Canadian workforce and a regard for the diversity of our culture.

Dave’s teaching career began in Scarborough, where he taught for almost ten years before he and his wife, Nancy, and their children, Ryan and Kayla, moved to Peterborough. He now teaches at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School.

Dave has held various positions within the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF), including being the President for District 14. He is currently Provincial Councillor for District 14 and an Executive member of the Peterborough and District Labour Council.

Dave has been widely involved with many community projects. He is an active member of the Peterborough Health and Electricity coalitions and a campaigner for electoral reform. He is a member of the board of directors of the Peterborough Community Legal Centre and a social and labour activist. He has been a candidate for the NDP in the past three provincial elections.

Dave has the experience - and the commitment - to represent Peterborough.

Labour Day Picnic

Although the summer days are growing noticeably shorter, there is still one special summer event to look forward to!

The free Peterborough and District Labour Council Labour Day Picnic is Monday, September 6 at the Nicholl's Oval Park pavillion at the corner of Parkhill Road East and Armour Road.

It is a great opportunity for New Democrats to come out and show their solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the labour movement. Ours is a long and deep historical relationship, and one which we have the opportunity to celebrate on Labour Day Monday.

The day promises lots of fun for all ages. There are games for the children and lots of prizes, drinks and ice cream.

The barbecue is from noon to 1 pm - come early to make sure you get a burger or a hotdog! They "sell out" early. Music follows by the Smokehouse Trio. Another feature of the day is the large number of draws - it seems almost everyone at the park goes home with something!

Our federal candidate, Dave Nickle, who is a delegate to the Labour Council from his union, OSSTF, will be there, so stop and say "hi!" and wish him luck.

So, mark Monday, Labour Day, on your calendar. And take a moment to remember why we celebrate it:

Community Members Fight Back

E-mail Print PDF

The Peterborough NDP have been getting a lot of emails lately from people in the community who aren't usually involved in politics. The bad news is they're worried by what our government has been doing these past few months. The good news is they want to do something about it! And they're demanding that we do something about it too. Please email us if you want to share any stories, insights, or demands you have that can help us make Peterborough and Canada better for everyone.
