Candidate Bio - Sheila Wood

Editors' note/update: Congratulations to Sheila who won the nomination and is now our NDP Candidate in the next Provincial Election!

Dear Friends,

I’m taking this opportunity to introduce myself and let you know that I will be seeking the nomination to represent (the citizens of Peterborough) and the NDP in the next Provincial election.

I’ve lived in Peterborough and the County for 24 years and currently operate my own small consulting business. I've worked and volunteered in our community in many different ways. As the former General Manager of the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area, I've worked with businesses, representatives at three different levels of government and the community to create various local projects and initiatives. By volunteering with different organizations, I have grown to understand and know the many issues which are important for our diverse population. As well, as a former union steward at UTLAS (U. of T. Library Services), I understand the importance of union workers in the service industries. I am currently working on the Steering Committee for No Casino Peterborough. A casino in our community, part of the business model of the current Liberal government to raise revenue, is a deterrent to our environment socially, economically and environmentally.

Building community is a priority for me. It is about making life better for all in Peterborough and the County. Poverty is increasing here and across the province. We need more focus on affordable housing. Much more support is needed for seniors to live in their own homes. Protecting public education and keeping our commitment to healthcare that works needs to be a major focus of Ontario's government. We must make sure that our natural resources and public money create jobs in Ontario first. We must be sustainable in everything we do, not only for ourselves, but most importantly for our children’s and grandchildren’s future.

Unemployment is too high in Peterborough. We can use our tax policy to support businesses that create new and permanent jobs in our City and County jobs that support a living wage. In our rural area, we must be supportive of our farmers and farmland. Farms feed cities and provide our community with added economic value.

People have become increasingly cynical by the constant stories of waste at Queen's Park. Politically motivated gas plant closures, ORNGE helicopters that don't work and EHealth mismanagement are a few examples.

After a slash and burn decade of Conservative government and a decade of Liberal government mismanagement, we deserve better. That is why I want to be your NDP representative at Queens Park.

As a long life time supporter of the New Democratic Party, I ask for your vote in choosing me to represent the NDP in the next provincial election. I believe in the values and policies of our party and know that we are the best choice for Ontario. Let’s work together for openness, fairness and honesty.

I invite you to call me at 705-874-8340 or email for more information.

Come out to the nomination meeting on April 6th.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Sheila Wood
